Tests and reviews of different batteries to help you find the Right One…
The 1.2V AAA 1000 mAh Xcell NiMH batteries are standard non low self discharge NiMHs and although rated with some of the highest capacities for AAA NiMHs we have our doubts that they will be able to provide 1000 mAh. We’ve already seen that Xcell’s AA NiMH batteries are rated higher than what they actually can provide, so we are expecting to see similar results here with the AAA NiMH batteries from Xcell.
We have started the test of the 1.2V AAA 1000 mAh Xcell NiMH batteries as we normally do with a low constant current discharge rate of 0.1A and the result we got was 859 mAh as capacity, or quite a bit below their rated 1000 mAh capacity. We can’t say we did not expect to see something like that, though looking at the performance of these Xcell AAA NiMH batteries with increased constant current load they do manage to perform good. So if they were rated at 850 mAh instead of 1000 mAh they would’ve not only meet their rating, but also perform great for 850 mAh rating. In the end if you want higher capacity 1000 mAh AAA NiMH batteries then you better look at some other products that are actually able to deliver.
The performance of the 1.2V AAA 1000 mAh Xcell NiMH batteries in our tests:
– 859 mAh at 0.1A load
– 767 mAh at 0.2A load
– 707 mAh at 0.5A load
– 654 mAh at 1.0A load
– 1.070 Wh at 0.1A load
– 0.941 Wh at 0.2A load
– 0.841 Wh at 0.5A load
– 0.736 Wh at 1.0A load
The 1.2V AA 2700 mAh Xcell NiMH batteries seem to offer a large capacity at a first glance, but we need to check if you actually get that much as hitting levels of 2700 mAh and being able to actually provide them in real conditions is something that the top battery brands are still struggling to do. Another thing to note with the higher capacity NiMH batteries is that they do have a faster initial self discharge, so they loose more of their capacity the first day they are charged than lower capacity NiMHs, unless they are from the LSD type. Anyway, lets us see what will these Xcell batteries be able to offer…
We have started the test of the 1.2V AA 2700 mAh Xcell NiMH batteries as we normally do with a low constant current discharge rate of 0.2A and the result we got was 2191 mAh as capacity and that is way too little for a battery rated at 2700 mAh, disappointing us a bit. Going further by increasing the constant current load at up to 2.0A, these batteries do manage to provide good results, so they are handling well higher loads, it is just that the useable capacity you get is less than advertised. We’ve repeated the tests multiple times just to be sure that this is really the maximum we can get from the AA Xcell NiMH batteries and in the end we would recommend to choose different 2700 mAh batteries if you are in need of higher capacity.
The performance of the 1.2V AA 2700 mAh Xcell NiMH Batteries in our tests:
– 2191 mAh at 0.2A load
– 1885 mAh at 0.5A load
– 1714 mAh at 1.0A load
– 1650 mAh at 2.0A load
– 2.758 Wh at 0.2A load
– 2.329 Wh at 0.5A load
– 2.029 Wh at 1.0A load
– 1.816 Wh at 2.0A load
The 1.5V AA Xcell Alkaline batteries don’t seem as something special, but we’ve decided to give them a try and see how good will they be able to perform in our tests. The batteries we’ve used for testing were with an expiration date of just the year 2017, no specific month, so they should be with either 4 or 5 years of shelf life.
Starting our test of the 1.5V AA Xcell Alkaline batteries as we usually do with a low constant current discharge rate of 0.1A we have managed to get 2063 mAh as capacity. With that capacity they do not manage to get into our top 10 of best AA-size Alkaline batteries, though the level of capacity they offer is still more than decent if the price is right. Increasing the level of constant current load that we are testing with to 0.2A we still get a decent useable capacity, but past that the performance gets even worse, so better not use these batteries for higher power drain applications.
The performance of the 1.5V AA Xcell Alkaline batteries in our tests:
– 2063 mAh at 0.1A load
– 1586 mAh at 0.2A load
– 761 mAh at 0.5A load
– 267 mAh at 1.0A load
– 2.521 Wh at 0.1A load
– 1.858 Wh at 0.2A load
– 0.859 Wh at 0.5A load
– 0.293 Wh at 1.0A load
